FCL vs LCL: Which Sea Freight Option Is Right for You?
When you ship by sea you have two choices: rent a whole container (FCL – Full Container Load) or share one with other shippers (LCL – Less than Container Load). The right choice depends mostly on how much cargo you have.
What is LCL?
With LCL, your goods are packed into a container together with other customers’ cargo. You pay only for the space you use, measured in cubic metres (CBM). It is ideal for small businesses and first-time importers.
What is FCL?
With FCL, the whole container is yours. A 20ft container holds about 33 CBM and a 40ft about 67 CBM. Your goods are sealed at origin and not handled with anyone else’s, which means less risk of damage and often a faster release at the port.
How to choose
- Under about 15 CBM: LCL is usually cheaper
- Around 15 CBM or more: compare – a 20ft FCL may cost the same or less
- Fragile or high-value goods: FCL reduces handling
- Tight deadline: FCL avoids waiting for a shared container to fill
